Bass Cat
A downloadable game for Windows
DESCRIPTION
Bass Cat is a short two-player rhythm game with RPG battle mechanics. Different combat options require player input to match a certain instrument, and have effects in battle proportional to rhythm accuracy. This project aims to recreate the feeling of shredding on someone in real life.
Rhythm functionality based on processing csv files containing midi data, made possible with MIDICSV by John Walker
CONTROLS
[Esc] - close the game
[F] - toggle fullscreen
[Space] - Player 1 rhythm input
[Enter] - Player 2 rhythm input
[1, 2, 3, 4] - Player 1 combat options
[H, I, J, K] - Player 2 combat options
HOW TO PLAY
1. Menu
Select menu options with number keys
2. Calibrate
At the end of the 4 beat intro, press [Space] to line up the game with the music.
NOTE: The calibration menu says press [Esc] to retry but this simply closes the window
3. Combat Menu
Combat options correspond to a certain instrument and have a battle effect that is proportional to the accuracy of rhythm from user input. More details below in "Combat Options"
Player 1 press [1, 2, 3, 4] to select options
Player 2 press [H, J, K, L] to select options
Both players select at the same time and rhythm input starts immediately once both are chosen
4. Input
Player 1 press [Space] to input
Player 2 press [Enter] to input
Press down the input key corresponding to the notes played by the instrument you selected for your attack. A note-display bar will appear on the screen as a guide.
NOTES:
Long notes (longer than 2 beats) need to be held out for their whole duration, while shorter notes only require a tap at the start of the note.
If your chosen instrument isn't playing at the time of input, you will have no effect. Be smart about when to choose attacks based on the state of the song.
Bug: some parts of the song have missing note data, likely due to bad file processing / bad input data. The note display will be empty at those times and no rhythm input will be registered.
5. Win Condition
Get the opponents health bar down to zero
Combat Options:
ATTACK
- Match your input to the DRUMS
- Effect: deal damage
BLOCK
- Match your input to the PIANO
- Effect: reduce incoming opponent damage, effective for wasting opponents meter from a MAGIC ATTACK
BUILD METER
- Match your input to the BASS
- Effect: build meter which can be spent to use MAGIC ATTACK
MAGIC ATTACK
- Match your input to the SAX
- Effect 1: deal higher damage by expending meter
- Effect 2: if meter is empty, deal damage by expending your own health
